When buying an LED screen, not only do you care about the LED screen price and how to use the LED screen, but also how to install the LED screen. LED screen manufacturers in France will share the installation methods of the LED screen.
LED Screen Installation Methods

LED screens are divided into various installation methods according to different applications. They are: fixed installation, rental installation, and stadium installation.
According to the user’s different environment, LED screens are divided into a variety of installation methods, including wall-mounted, cantilevered, inlaid, column, standing, roof, mobile, stadium fence type, rental and lifting type, arc-form and other installation methods.
Let’s take a look at the more common 11 LED screen installation methods.
11 LED Display Screen Installation Types at a Glance
| Installation Type | Typical Application | Main Advantage | Main Limitation |
| Wall-mounted | Indoor walls, storefronts, small outdoor displays | Simple structure and compact depth | Limited rear access |
| Column / pole-mounted | Outdoor advertising | Independent structure | Wind load and foundation are critical |
| Cantilever | Corridors, entrances, transport areas | Saves floor space | Requires strong anchoring |
| Hanging | Stations, halls, stages | No floor support needed | Ceiling/truss load must be checked |
| Recessed / inlaid | Building entrances, interiors | Flush appearance | Limited service space |
| Stand-up / floor-standing | Indoor LED TV, showroom | Easy to move or position | Requires stable base |
| Roof-mounted | Rooftops, outdoor advertising | High visibility | Strong wind exposure |
| Stadium perimeter | Football fields, sports venues | Suitable for close spectator areas | Requires anti-collision design |
| Rental lifting | Events, concerts, stages | Fast installation and removal | Rigging must be engineered |
| Curved / arc | Creative displays, circular screens | Curved visual effect | Requires curved structure |
| Truss mobile | Concerts, TV, events | Movable with the event setup | More complex temporary structure |
Current LED display cabinets increasingly support multiple installation modes rather than being designed for only one method. For example, current commercial products use 500 × 500 mm or 500 × 1000 mm cabinet formats and can support combinations of wall mounting, hanging, stacking, front maintenance, and rear maintenance.
1. Wall-Mounted Installation

This installation method is usually used indoors or outdoors.
The display area is small, generally no maintenance access space is left, the whole screen is taken down for maintenance, or a folded integrated frame is made. The screen area is a little larger and generally adopts the front maintenance design, usually with an assembly method.
For indoor small and medium-size LED video walls, wall mounting is one of the most common installation methods because it keeps the screen close to the wall and reduces the required floor area.
Front Maintenance vs Rear Maintenance
Front maintenance is especially useful when there is little or no space behind the LED display. The LED modules, receiving cards, power supplies, or other serviceable components can be accessed from the front, depending on the cabinet design.
Rear maintenance is easier when the screen is installed with an accessible service corridor.
As a practical planning value:
- Front-maintenance LED display: can be installed close to the wall, subject to the cabinet and frame design.
- Rear-maintenance LED display: allow approximately 600–1000 mm of working space behind the screen where technicians need regular access.
- Large fixed outdoor displays: a wider maintenance corridor may be required for power distribution, controllers, ventilation, and structural inspection.
Modern fixed-install LED products are available with both front and rear service configurations. Some outdoor cabinets also use IP65 protection on both the front and rear sides.
2. Column-Type Installation

There are a variety of column installation methods, generally used for outdoor advertising, including:
- Single-column installation: suitable for small screen applications.
- Dual-column installation: suitable for large screen applications.
- Closed maintenance channels: applicable to simple cabinets.
- Open maintenance channels: suitable for standard cabinets.
Column or pole-mounted LED screens are normally installed independently of the building wall. This makes them suitable for roadside advertising, plazas, commercial areas, and large outdoor signs.
The key engineering issue is not simply the weight of the LED display. The pole, foundation, anchor bolts, steel frame, and LED screen must also resist wind-induced forces and overturning moments.
Example of Outdoor LED Screen Wind Load
Wind pressure should not be selected by a single universal value because the required design depends on local wind speed, building height, terrain, exposure, screen geometry, and the applicable building code.
A basic physical estimate can be made from:
q ≈ 0.613 × V²
Where:
- q = wind pressure in N/m²
- V = wind speed in m/s
For example:
- 20 m/s wind → about 245 N/m²
- 25 m/s wind → about 383 N/m²
- 30 m/s wind → about 552 N/m²
- 35 m/s wind → about 751 N/m²
- 40 m/s wind → about 981 N/m²
These are only basic dynamic-pressure examples, not final design loads. Actual structural calculations also use pressure and force coefficients and local code requirements.
In Europe, wind actions are addressed by EN 1991-1-4 (Eurocode 1) together with the applicable National Annex.
Therefore, for a pole-mounted or high-level outdoor LED display, the manufacturer should receive the installation height, screen dimensions, site location, wind zone, foundation information, and mounting orientation before confirming the steel structure.
3. Cantilever Installation

This method is mostly used for indoor and semi-outdoor use.
It is generally used at entrances of corridors and halls, as well as entrances to stations, railway stations, and subways.
It is also used for traffic guidance on highways and railways.
The screen body design generally adopts one cabinet design or a hoisting structure design.
The main advantage of cantilever installation is that it keeps the ground area clear. However, the supporting beam and anchoring points must carry both the static weight of the screen and the additional bending moment created by the offset distance.
For a small LED sign projecting from a wall, keeping the screen as close as practical to the main support reduces the structural moment.
4. Hanging Installation

This installation method is similar to the cantilever installation method. The application is the same.
The screen body adopts an integrated cabinet design scheme and is suitable for indoor and semi-outdoor screens.
Hanging installation is commonly used in:
- Airports and railway stations
- Shopping malls
- Conference halls
- Exhibition centers
- Stage and event installations
- Indoor advertising displays
For indoor hanging installations, the ceiling structure cannot be assumed to support the LED screen simply because the ceiling itself is structurally sound. The actual load path must be checked from the LED cabinet through the hanging frame, anchors, beams, and building structure.
Rental LED products commonly use dedicated hanging bars or rigging systems rather than relying on improvised hooks. Current rental platforms can combine hanging and stacking configurations and may include dedicated wind-bracing systems for outdoor use.
5. Mosaic / Recessed Installation

This installation method is also called recessed or inlaid installation.
- The entire display screen is embedded in the wall, and the display plane and the wall are on the same level.
- The simple box design is adopted.
- The front maintenance design is generally adopted.
- The installation method is used for indoor and outdoor applications, but it is generally suitable for small and medium display areas.
- It is generally used for building entrances, building halls, retail interiors, and architectural display applications.
The main difference between a recessed screen and a conventional wall-mounted screen is the relationship between the cabinet and the finished wall.
For recessed installations, the frame opening should normally include installation tolerance and service access rather than being made exactly equal to the nominal cabinet dimension. A practical fabrication tolerance of several millimeters is commonly required, depending on the cabinet structure and steel frame.
Heat dissipation also needs to be considered. An LED display installed inside a tightly enclosed wall cavity may require dedicated ventilation or thermal design.
6. Stand-Up / Floor-Standing Installation

Generally, a one-piece cabinet design is adopted, and there is also a split-type combination design.
It is suitable for indoor small-pitch specification screens.
The general display area is small.
The typical application is LED TV design.
This type of installation is often used for reception areas, conference rooms, showrooms, retail stores, museums, and portable commercial displays.
For floor-standing LED displays, the base should be designed to prevent tipping during normal operation and maintenance. As the screen gets taller, the center of gravity becomes more important than the screen’s footprint alone.
For a freestanding display, the structure should therefore be checked for:
- Total screen weight
- Center of gravity
- Base width and depth
- Accidental pushing or impact
- Cable routing
- Service access
7. Roof-Type Installation

The wind resistance is a key factor for this installation method.
It is generally installed with an inclined angle, or the module is designed with a slope of approximately 8°, depending on the application.
It is used for outdoor advertising display.
Roof-mounted LED screens have a more demanding structural environment because the screen is exposed to wind at an elevated position and may also affect the existing roof structure.
The installation should therefore confirm:
- Structural capacity of the roof.
- Load transfer from the steel frame to the building structure.
- Wind pressure and overturning moment.
- Waterproofing around structural penetrations.
- Lightning and grounding requirements.
- Access for maintenance.
- Emergency access around the equipment.
A common mistake is to calculate only the LED cabinet weight. For a rooftop screen, the supporting steel frame, maintenance platform, electrical equipment, walkways, and other permanent loads must also be considered.
8. Football Field Fence Installation

For the perimeter of a football field, the stadium display screen angle can be adjusted with the tilt of the support frame.
A soft silicone mask design and a soft arc-top design are adopted to help reduce the risk of sports collision injuries.
Stadium perimeter LED displays are different from normal fixed advertising screens because people and athletes can approach or collide with the front of the display.
A practical installation should consider:
- Typical tilt angle: approximately 8–15°, depending on the sightline and cabinet system.
- Protective front structure: soft mask, cushion, or dedicated protective profile.
- Lower edge clearance: should follow the stadium’s safety requirements.
- Cabinet connection: must prevent individual panels from shifting after impact.
- Service access: should remain possible without exposing players or spectators to hazards.
The purpose of the inclined installation is not only viewing-angle optimization. It also helps move the LED cabinet surface away from direct contact with players.
9. Rental Lifting Method

The size of the screen is determined by the normal screen.
The lifting screen should not be excessively large.
The original rule of “below 6 m × 10 m” should not be treated as a universal engineering limit. A 6 × 10 m screen is already 60 m², and the allowable size depends on cabinet weight, hanging points, truss capacity, hoists, venue restrictions, rigging design, and local safety requirements.
Special materials and curtain-like exceptions may be used for lightweight rental or mesh systems.
The top is equipped with a lifting beam and the bottom is equipped with a bottom beam. Hanger beams are used to lift the screen.
Between the line and the box, the hoisting mechanism is used to connect, and the horizontal box is locked with the buckle.
Lifting mechanism types include:
- Gear type
- Cone-type
- Bolt type
The gear type is more expensive and provides convenient adjustment.
The cone-type is moderately priced and reliable.
The bolt type is cheap and reliable, but assembly is more complicated and it is not suitable for repeated installation and disassembly.
Additional Rental Lifting Requirements
For a rental LED screen, the installation system should be designed around the rated hanging capacity of the complete system, not simply the cabinet’s net weight.
The total suspended load can include:
LED panels + hanging bars + bottom bars + frame + cables + rigging hardware + other suspended equipment
Modern rental LED systems increasingly use lightweight cabinets and integrated locking systems. For example, a current 500 × 500 mm rental panel can weigh around 5.5–10 kg per panel, depending on the product class and materials.
For an overhead installation, safety cables or secondary retention should be provided where required by the venue and applicable regulations.
The hoist, truss, shackles, slings, lifting beams, connection points, and LED cabinets should all have compatible rated capacities.
10. Arc-Form / Curved Installation

Screen length × width (height): L × W
Here:
- W = screen height
- L = screen length
The length of the screen can be initially determined by the circumference of the circle or arc.
Divide the required circumference by the module width to determine the number of modules.
For a circular screen, the number of modules depends on the bending angle of each module. If one module creates approximately 4° of curvature, a complete 360° circle requires:
360° ÷ 4° = 90 modules
Therefore, the original statement that “92 modules are needed to form a perfect circular screen” is not mathematically correct when each module is 4°. Ninety 4° modules make 360°.
If a module has a width of 500 mm and each module contributes approximately 4° of curvature, the approximate circumference is:
90 × 0.5 m = 45 m
The corresponding approximate radius is:
R = 45 ÷ 2π ≈ 7.16 m
For a circular screen, the module angle and cabinet design must be confirmed by the manufacturer. The exact radius also depends on whether the specified module width is treated as an arc length or a chord length.
For non-circular screens, the modules can be divided down as needed, like a cake shape.
The mounting bracket needs to be customized according to the size of the circular screen or arc screen.
Curved LED Screen Installation Limits
Not every LED cabinet can be curved.
The allowable concave or convex angle depends on the cabinet’s mechanical design. Some current rental LED panels support specific curved configurations, such as approximately 10° concave to 0° convex or other manufacturer-defined ranges.
Therefore, the correct order is:
Required radius → required cabinet/module angle → compatible LED cabinet → customized steel frame
The cabinet should not be forced into a smaller radius than its mechanical specification.
11. Truss Mobile Installation

- The screen body can be moved in real time according to actual needs.
- The screen body moves according to the display screen and the scene.
- The truss guide rail design is used.
- The screen is generally applied to the stage background screen, mostly used for television stations, concerts, and other event scenes.
The truss mobile installation method is particularly useful when the LED display must be repositioned during an event.
It can be used for:
- Television studios
- Concerts
- Touring stages
- Corporate events
- Exhibition stages
- Broadcast backgrounds
- Temporary performance venues
For repeated installation and transportation, rental cabinets should be selected based on mechanical durability, locking mechanism, weight, serviceability, and transportation method rather than LED specifications alone.
Current rental products commonly use quick-lock systems and lightweight 500 × 500 mm cabinets to reduce installation and transport time.
Fixed Installation vs Rental Installation
One of the most important installation decisions is whether the LED screen will be permanently fixed or repeatedly installed and removed.
| Item | Fixed LED Screen | Rental LED Screen |
| Installation period | Long-term | Temporary / repeated |
| Cabinet design | Rigid, weather-oriented | Lightweight, quick-lock |
| Maintenance | Front or rear | Usually front and rear |
| Typical cabinet formats | 500×500, 500×1000 mm and custom | 500×500 mm common |
| Structural support | Permanent steel frame | Truss, hanging bar, stacking frame |
| Weight priority | Moderate | Very important |
| Waterproofing | Critical outdoors | Depends on indoor/outdoor use |
| Transportation | Usually limited | Frequent |
| Curved installation | Custom or dedicated cabinet | Common on some rental systems |
For example, current outdoor fixed LED products can weigh under 30 kg/m² while offering IP65 protection, while lightweight rental products can be substantially lighter. These are product examples rather than universal industry limits.
How to Choose the Right LED Screen Installation Method
The installation method should be selected according to the building, viewing distance, environment, maintenance method, and whether the screen is permanent or temporary.
For Indoor Conference Rooms
Choose wall-mounted, recessed, or stand-up installation.
For close viewing, a pixel pitch of approximately 1.2–2.6 mm is commonly used, depending on screen size and viewing distance.
As a general starting point, optimal viewing distance is often estimated at roughly:
Viewing distance in feet ≈ 3 × pixel pitch in mm
For example:
- P1.5 → about 4.5 ft
- P2.0 → about 6 ft
- P2.5 → about 7.5 ft
- P3.9 → about 11.7 ft
- P5.0 → about 15 ft
This is only a starting estimate. Audience density, content type, camera use, and ambient light should also be considered.
For Outdoor Advertising
Choose column-mounted, wall-mounted, or roof-mounted installation.
The most important engineering factors are:
Wind load + steel structure + foundation + waterproofing + maintenance access
Outdoor LED cabinets commonly use IP65-rated construction. However, an IP rating applies to the tested enclosure configuration; cable connectors, cable entry points, power distribution boxes, and other external components must also be suitable for the installation environment. IEC 60529 defines the IP Code for degrees of protection provided by enclosures.
For Concerts and Stage Events
Choose rental lifting or truss mobile installation.
Typical priorities are:
- Low cabinet weight
- Fast-locking mechanism
- Front and rear maintenance
- Easy transportation
- Curving capability
- Reliable hanging points
- High refresh rate for camera use
For professional camera environments, 3840 Hz or higher is a common specification, while current rental products can reach 7680 Hz.
For Football and Stadium Applications
Choose stadium perimeter installation.
The display should be designed for impact protection, inclined viewing, quick maintenance, and safe separation from players and spectators.
For Building Facades
Choose wall-mounted, recessed, roof-mounted, or custom curved installation, depending on the building structure.
For facade projects, the LED screen should not be attached directly to curtain-wall glass or cladding without a structural assessment. The support system should transfer loads to a structure specifically capable of carrying them.
LED Screen Installation: Weight and Cabinet Size
Cabinet size directly affects the steel structure, transportation, labor, and maintenance method.
Common LED cabinet dimensions include:
- 500 × 500 mm
- 500 × 1000 mm
- 960 × 960 mm
- 1000 × 1000 mm
Current products show a wide range of cabinet weights. Outdoor fixed cabinets can be around 26–30 kg/m², while lightweight rental panels can be below 10 kg per 500 × 500 mm panel.
A useful project calculation is:
Total LED screen weight = screen area × cabinet weight per m²
For example, a 30 m² screen using a 28 kg/m² cabinet:
30 × 28 = 840 kg
The actual suspended or supported load will be higher after adding the steel frame, cables, power distribution, maintenance platform, and other accessories.
LED Screen Installation and Power Requirements
Installation design should also consider the power distribution system.
The LED display itself is only one part of the electrical system. A complete installation may include:
Main power → distribution cabinet → circuit breakers → LED power supplies → receiving cards → LED modules
For larger fixed installations, the distribution system should be designed and verified according to the applicable electrical requirements.
IEC 62368-1:2023 is the current international product-safety standard covering audio/video and information and communication technology equipment, and IEC notes that a corrected version was issued in 2025.
For low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, IEC 61439-1:2020 defines general construction, technical, and verification requirements, with the relevant part of the IEC 61439 series applying to the specific assembly.
The exact electrical design still depends on the destination country, supply voltage, local electrical code, breaker arrangement, cable length, and installed power.
LED Screen Installation and Maintenance Planning
Maintenance is often overlooked when choosing the installation method.
Before fabrication, confirm whether the display requires:
- Front maintenance
- Rear maintenance
- Side access
- Module replacement
- Power-supply replacement
- Receiving-card replacement
- Controller access
- Cable replacement
A front-maintenance LED display is usually preferable where the screen is installed directly against a wall.
A rear-maintenance design is usually easier to service when a dedicated maintenance corridor is available.
For a permanent outdoor LED display, maintenance planning should also include drainage, ventilation, cable routing, lightning protection, grounding, and access for lifting replacement modules or power supplies.
LED Screen Installation Checklist
Before the LED display is manufactured and installed, the following information should be confirmed:
1. Screen Size
Confirm:
Width × Height = total display area
For example:
6 m × 3 m = 18 m²
2. Cabinet Size
Confirm whether the cabinet is:
500 × 500 mm, 500 × 1000 mm, 960 × 960 mm, 1000 × 1000 mm, or customized
3. Total Weight
Calculate:
Screen area × kg/m²
Then add the support structure and accessories.
4. Maintenance Method
Confirm whether the project has:
Front service / Rear service / Side service
5. Wind Conditions
For outdoor screens, confirm:
Location + installation height + screen dimensions + local design wind speed + mounting method
Do not use one universal wind-load number for all outdoor LED displays. EN 1991-1-4 provides a framework for wind actions in Eurocode design, together with national parameters where applicable.
6. Viewing Distance
Confirm the minimum, average, and maximum viewing distance before selecting the pixel pitch.
7. Installation Type
Confirm whether the screen is:
Wall-mounted / Pole-mounted / Cantilevered / Recessed / Floor-standing / Roof-mounted / Stadium perimeter / Hanging / Rental / Curved / Truss mobile
8. Outdoor Protection
For outdoor applications, confirm the required IP rating, operating temperature, rain exposure, drainage, and cable protection.
Current outdoor LED products commonly specify IP65, but the actual protection level should always be confirmed from the complete product configuration and certification/testing documentation.
Common LED Screen Installation Mistakes
The most common installation problems are not caused by the LED modules themselves. They usually come from incorrect structural or service planning.
1. Designing the Steel Frame Before Confirming the Cabinet
Cabinet dimensions, mounting points, weight, and maintenance direction should be confirmed first.
2. Ignoring Wind Load
A screen installed at ground level and a screen installed on a rooftop cannot use the same structural assumptions.
3. Leaving No Maintenance Space
A rear-service cabinet installed 100 mm from a wall creates a maintenance problem even if the screen itself works correctly.
4. Using the Wrong Curvature
A cabinet designed for a 10° curve should not be mechanically forced into a smaller radius.
5. Calculating Only the LED Cabinet Weight
The final structural load includes the LED screen, frame, cables, power distribution, hanging hardware, and other accessories.
6. Treating IP65 as a Complete Installation Specification
The LED cabinet may be IP65 while the cable glands, connectors, controller boxes, and power distribution equipment have different protection levels.
Conclusion
LED screen installation is not simply about fixing the display to a wall or steel frame. The correct installation method depends on the LED cabinet design, screen size, weight, viewing distance, maintenance method, wind conditions, structural support, electrical system, and application environment.
The 11 common LED screen installation methods include wall-mounted, column-type, cantilever, hanging, recessed, stand-up, roof-type, football field fence, rental lifting, arc-form, and truss mobile installation.
For small indoor displays, wall-mounted, recessed, or stand-up installation is usually practical.
For outdoor advertising screens, column-type, wall-mounted, and roof-type installation require particular attention to structural wind load and foundation design.
For concerts and rental applications, hanging and truss mobile installation provide faster deployment.
For football stadiums, perimeter LED displays require dedicated impact protection and viewing-angle design.
For curved and circular LED screens, the cabinet’s mechanical curvature must be confirmed before the supporting structure is fabricated. For example, if each module produces 4° of curvature, 90 modules are required for a complete 360° circle, not 92.
LED screen manufacturers and suppliers should therefore confirm the complete installation conditions before recommending the cabinet, support frame, power distribution, and maintenance method.
